Boston Stranglers: The Untold Story

This one is way more interesting than I thought it would be.  And I don’t usually inject too much of my opinion on this podcast, wanting you to just have the story and the facts as I have found them in my research…..but I have lots of thoughts on this, and I really want to know what you all think.  Stay tuned at the end for information on the new voice message I have for all of you and how we will start doing an update episode here and there if you guys all like it.

The case covered in this episode is The Boston Strangler, The Untold Story, because most people still assume that Albert DeSalvo was the Boston Strangler and murdered all of the 13 women accredited to the “Boston Strangler.”  Albert DeSalvo confessed to 11 murders.  However, his confessions have been disputed, and there is a lot to this story.

We will be going over the movie: The Boston Strangler: The Untold Story and then covering the Real Story and the developments that have happened since then.

Trial By Fire

I’ll be the first to admit that when I hear that a parent or parents escaped a burning house unharmed and all of the kids die, I’m a little suspicious.  And when you start watching this movie, that is how you feel.

But there are questions….

And the more you learn, the more you question……

The movie and the case for this episode is:  Trial By Fire  (2018-2019) movie that I found available for streaming on  (Prime Video) and  (Hulu).  It stars Jack O’Connel, Laura Dern and Emily Meade.

The tragic and controversial story of Cameron Todd Willingham, who was sentenced to death in Texas for killing his three children even after scientific evidence and expert testimony bolstered his claims of innocence

We will cover the movie, the story of what really happened, and the controversy.

The Last Hangman

The Last Hangman

Today’s case and movie is The Last Hangman which is based on the life and career of Albert Pierrepoint, who was one of the head executioners in the UK between 1931 and 1956.  It is estimated he executed between 435 and 600 people, 200 of these were war criminals right after WWII.

We will cover the movie, the real story of Pierrepoint, and some of the infamous murderers that he executed.

The Blackout Ripper (Bonus Epi)

Welcome back to Cherry Avenue True Crime Podcast!

I have a bonus mini-episode for you today about the Blackout Killer.

In my next upcoming episode:  The Last Hangman, I will be covering Albert Pierrepoint and the movie made about his career as executioner from 1931 to 1956. During his career he executed somewhere between 435 and 600 people. 200 of those were from war crimes that took place during WWII, such as the Beast of Belsen and Irma Grese.

Pierrepoint executed many notable murderers in the UK, but one that was not featured in the movie, was Gordon Cummins, aka the Blackout Killer or the Blackout Ripper.

So for this mini-episode we will go over one of the truly horrible men that Albert Pierrepoint had to encounter during his job as head executioner in 1942.

At Close Range

Welcome Back to Cherry Avenue True Crime Podcast.

Just a quick reminder that new episodes come out on the 15th and 30th of each month, with the occasional random bonus episode thrown out there, so please hit subscribe so you don’t miss any episodes.

At Close Range  is an incredibly good movie.  It’s from 1986 and I found it on Amazon Prime, as well as Tubi which is a free streaming service and it looks like it is available on Showtime as well, although I currently don’t have that one.

It has a star studded cast including:

Sean Penn, Mary Stuart Masterson, Chris Penn, Christopher Walken, Crispin Glover and Kiefer Sutherland.

It is an excellent movie all on it’s own. One of the reviews I read said “I recommend this movie to anyone and everyone.”

This is one of the few old true crime movies that I hadn’t seen, and hadn’t heard about the case before watching.  I’m not kidding when I say that there were at least two parts that had me absolutely speechless.  Like jaw dropping.

I was so blown away by this movie that I decided to move it up in the recording schedule.

The movie starts out with the words:  Based on a True Story.

And I’m going to tell you….this movie follows so close to the real story…it’s one of the closest to the real stories I’ve ever seen.  So, I’ll tell you about the movie which is just about the whole real story, and then at the end I’ll tell you about the bits that were included just for the movie, and I’ll go over what really happened in those instances.

Abducted From Home

Cases where children go missing or are murdered really haunt me.

It’s terrifying when they are missing.  So many horrible scenarios are considered as to how they are being treated or if they are still alive.

When children are found dead after having gone missing, often the parents or other family members are looked into.

Unfortunately, we have seen on many occasions where the parents or one of the parents does indeed turn out to be the one responsible.  Usually, after they had been in the news, tearfully asking for their child, or step-child  to be returned.

Today’s case is a about a little girl who goes missing and when she is found dead authorities look to her parents.  It does not seem to me that her parents were in any way responsible, but you be the judge.

Helter Skelter Special Part 1

This was a truly horrific murder spree.  Sometimes I think the humanity of the victims is really lost in all the Charles Manson craziness.  Humans are always looking to belong, looking for their “people”, looking for people like themselves, craving a connection of some kind.  Manson played into this at one of the easiest times in history to pull it off. He didn’t even know what type of world he was walking out into when he was released from prison in the 1967.  But he was good at adapting quickly, after years of having to survive abusive care from relatives and then people in the reform schools and boys homes he lived in and on into prison.  He came out with his pimp knowledge and his Dale Carnegies’ How to Make Friends and Influence People education along with his gift of being able to turn into (or seem like) what people wanted.  He didn’t change into what he wanted until they were well well ensnared.

No Good Reason

Napa is located in Northern California and is known for it’s wine vineyards.    Halloween night in 2004 brought a horror movie scene to this picturesque town.

Roommates’, Leslie, Lauren and Adriane had a fun night of handing out candy and had retired to their separate bedrooms.

Lauren fell asleep but awoke to her dog growling.  Listening attentively she heard some unusual noises in the house and then screaming.  She looked out her door and saw a man run down the stairs and then jump out the front window.  She found her roommates had been attacked and she called 911.  Leslie Mazarra, 25,  was dead.  Adrien Insogna, 26, was rushed to hospital but died before arriving.  They had both been Stabbed repeatedly.

Unearthed Bones

A Heavy Equipment Operator was working on the property of an old yellow house that had been falling into disrepair.  It had been empty for quite a while and he was starting the steps of demolishing the old farm house, when up comes a ragged black trash bag with bones and fabric in it.

Police were called of course.

It was eventually determined to be the bones of a human being.

Unsolved Jane Doe Murders

This is a special episode about some unsolved murders involving Jane Does.  So not only have the murders never been caught, the victims identities are unknown.  If you are a regular listener, you know we usually go over solved cases, and discus the victim and perpetrator in detail.

Today, I decided to dedicate this episode to the unsolved jane does as I keep coming across more and more of them in my research.  These are some that particularly haunt me, but there are many more out there, sadly.

The Caller

A business office in the front of a factory building, gets a phone call.  A man’s voice tells the receptionist, Rose, that there is a body behind their building.

The caller tells the receptionist:  “There is a dead body in the back of your lot.”

Now I have had to answer the phones working in business offices many times over the years and I have got some crank calls, but never that.

The caller hangs up soon after telling her to please report it to authorities.

There is not much mystery as to Who perpetrated the murders, but there certainly is as to the Why?

When was it that two people decided that the other person had to die?

How did they decide that this was the only way to go?

Where did the madness set in?

And What created this culmination of sadness, madness and evil?

Looking for Mr. Goodbar Murder

This is the true story of the murder of Roseann Quinn.

It was the basis for the Novel, Looking For Mr. Goodbar,  written by Judith Rossner.  The novel was the basis for the 1977 movie Looking for Mr. Goodbar staring Dianne Keaton and Richard Gere.  Both the novel and movie were loosely based on Rosanne’s murder. In the movie and the novel Rosann’s name was changed to Theresa.

There is another book , Closing Time, by Lacey Forsburgh which says up front that it is The True Story of the “Looking for Mr. Goodbar” murder but names were changed and some parts , especially some of the dialogue, was fictionalized.  In this book Closing Time, Rosann was called Katherine.   I definitely recommend this book.  There is a lot more in it than I could ever tell you here an it’s an addictive read.

After you hear the whole story you will understand why it was covered in so many newspaper accounts.  It was an ongoing case, and investigation, and was covered just about every step of the way through it, and even after it.

Murders So Heinous and the Vigilante Justice Afterwards

Vigilante Justice.

There are cases of murder and assaults that are so horrendous that they can make us understand why people would want to exact their own justice. The cases we are talking about today are crimes just that bad. In each case the people who knew the victims or lived near them were outraged and horrified by the crimes.

The murder of May Hawes and her mother and little sister.

The kidnapping and murder of Brooke Hart

The murders of the Haven family

The murder of the Copple Parents with seven children at home

And the well founded outrage that was felt after each heinous act

When You Least Expect It

Ginger Rios disappeared after going into a little shop in a strip mall in Las Vegas. Her husband was sitting in the car waiting for her, but she never returned. After waiting quite a while, he went into the store that he had seen her go into and asked if she was still there. The owner of the store told him that she had bought a couple of books and left.
Her husband knew she had gone into the little store, called Spy Craft, to buy a book on how to clean up her credit. She had left her purse in the car and had just taken her wallet with her. He was bewildered as to where she had gone!

The Sorceress and the Noblewoman

I have something a little bit different for you today.
I have two true crime stories that go way, way back.
One is about a supposed Sorceress from the 1300’s in Ireland, and another is an extremely cruel and evil noblewoman in 1700’s Russia. Catherine The Great makes an appearance today in one of these true crime stories. I wonder if you can guess which one.
I thought it might be nice to go way back in history and get a break from anything even close to current or present day. I hope you enjoy it.

True Crime Cautionaries

There are a lot of reasons people are interested in real true crime stories. For one thing, it’s been going on since the beginning of crime, which would be the beginning of time. And then there is the Knowledge that comes with all that. There are things that can be learned from it.  True Crime, Following True Crime, Watching the bad things on the news, can be important. It can help. It can help you and others in your life.

When I was a teenager and driving my own car for the first time, I wasn’t watching the news, and we didn’t have smart phones or social media then. My family members told me about how bad men were deliberately hitting women’s cars with their cars to get them to pull over….and some women were raped, some killed. The idea being they would pull over to see the damage on the car, to exchange insurance information, etc. The whole Don’t Stop, Drive to the Police Station thing started then, at least as far as I know. People who cared were telling young people not to stop in these situations. Drive to somewhere safe, a police station if possible.

So you can learn things from True Crime.

There are a lot of women that listen to their intuition. We need to.

Deadly Dysfunctional

Two people trying to make a go of it again, but there is a lot going on.  They have blended family part-time, and this as well as a mixture of increasing drug use and rage, combines to create an ending that just shouldn’t have happened.  It didn’t have to happen.  But it did.

Erroneously and Reprehensibly Released (Twice)

Two stints in an insane asylum.  Let out twice when he shouldn’t have been.  Today’s subject went on to commit increasingly more serious and brutal crimes each time.  So many might have been prevented if his crimes and convictions had been handled correctly.  So many victims and so much pain.  Detroit’s lesser known serial killer, Gary Addison Taylor, who went on to commit heinous crimes in Seattle and Houston.  If you know about Gary A Taylor, don’t go anywhere, I might have some info that you haven’t heard about him.  If you have never heard of Gary A Taylor, stay tuned, his story is very interesting and very strange.
